KBS1

KBS1 is the public broadcaster's flagship channel Korean Broadcasting System (KBS). Launched in 1961, it differs significantly from KBS2 in that its programming is more focused on news, documentaries, culture, education, and public service programs. Since 1994, it has also operated without commercial advertising.

In the field of K-dramas, KBS1 therefore plays a less prominent role than KBS2. The channel primarily focuses on long-running family and daily series, which often focus on multiple generations, family relationships, marriage, and everyday life. This format contrasts with the 12- to 20-episode dramas—which are more easily exportable—that currently dominate international streaming platforms.

This tradition continues to be evident in recent productions. In 2025, KBS1 is airing Marie and Her Three Daddies, a series of 120 episodes blending comedy, drama, family, and romance. In 2026, the network continues in this direction with Our Happy Days, also scheduled for 120 episodes, combining romance, comedy, and slice of life.

KBS1 thus represents another facet of K-drama: less focused on major international hits than KBS2, but more deeply rooted in daily family soap operas and the viewing habits of the South Korean public.
