A few days after the first casting rumors surfaced, Netflix officially confirmed the production of « First Doctor » and revealed its main cast.
The new medical drama will star Jung Ryeo-won, Ha Yoon-kyung, Baek Hyun-jin, Kim Jong-soo, and Kim Moo-yeol in a story centered on a pediatric surgery department facing closure.
Jung Ryeo-won plays a surgeon on the verge of a breakdown
«First Doctor» takes place in a pediatric surgery department facing a major crisis and the imminent threat of closure.
Jung Ryeo-won plays Heo Ji-wan, a pediatric surgery professor known for her exceptional skills and strong sense of responsibility. However, her frank and direct personality has earned her a reputation as a real «troublemaker» at the hospital.
Following an unexpected incident, she is forced to return to Yeonhwa University Hospital, a place she had left against her will and never wanted to see again.
Faced with a department threatened with closure, Heo Ji-wan will have to do everything in her power to protect both the future of the young patients and that of the pediatric surgery department.
Ha Yoon-kyung and Kim Moo-yeol Join the Medical Team
Ha Yoon-kyung will play Ki Eun-gyeol, a strong-willed third-year resident. Despite her sometimes rebellious attitude, she is known for her intelligence and surgical talent. Her personality regularly leads her to clash with Heo Ji-wan, giving rise to a relationship that is as conflict-ridden as it is fascinating.
Baek Hyun-jin will play Son Sang-baek, the head of the surgery department, while Kim Jong-soo will play Lee Chang-gon, the hospital’s deputy director.
Kim Moo-yul, meanwhile, joins the series as Bae Su-wol, a professor of anesthesiology and pain medicine. With his warm personality, he has a long-standing relationship with Heo Ji-wan and is expected to become one of her main sources of support.
A new collaboration between Kim Moo-yeol and the director of «Teach You a Lesson»
Another important character is Bae Su-wol, played by Kim Moo-yeol.
A professor of anesthesiology and pain medicine, he is described as a warm and caring man who has known Heo Ji-wan for many years. He is expected to become one of his most reliable allies at the hospital.
His arrival is also drawing attention for another reason: «First Doctor» will mark the third collaboration between Kim Moo-yul and director Hong Jong-chan, following «Juvenile Justice» and the recent hit «Teach You a Lesson.».
The director is also reuniting with screenwriter Kim Min-seok, with whom he previously worked on «Juvenile Justice,» thus bringing together a proven creative team.
A team of veterans to round out the medical staff
The drama will also feature several experienced actors.
Baek Hyeon-jin will play Son Sang-baek, the head of the surgery department at Yeonhwa University Hospital, while Kim Jong-soo will play Lee Chang-gon, the hospital’s deputy director.
Thanks to their experience, the two actors should lend greater weight to the internal conflicts and tensions that will arise within the hospital.
With its strong cast, its exploration of human struggles, and its in-depth look at a medical department facing challenges, «First Doctor» is already shaping up to be one of Netflix’s most anticipated upcoming medical dramas.
No air date has been announced yet (but it will be in 2027).
