Jang Ki-yong in talks for the lead role in a Korean-Japanese series

Jang Ki-yong is currently considering an offer to join the cast of «Get Out of the Peninsula.» The actor is reportedly being considered for the male lead role, although no final agreement has been announced yet.

This distinction is important: his participation has not been officially confirmed at this point. The drama is being presented as a South Korean-Japanese co-production, with plans to stream it on Amazon Prime Video.

Filming is expected to begin in Japan in early 2027, suggesting that this will be a particularly ambitious international production.

At this time, no further details have been released regarding the character Jang Ki-yong might play, the other cast members, or the air date.

An adaptation of Ryū Murakami's novel about the occupation of a Japanese island

«Get Out of the Peninsula» will be adapted from the Japanese novel «Hantō o Deyo,» published in 2005 by author Ryū Murakami.

The original work depicts a particularly tense situation: members of North Korean special forces take control of a Japanese island, triggering a crisis with potentially far-reaching consequences.

This starting point naturally sets the story against a backdrop of military tensions, suspense, and political stakes. The novel garnered significant acclaim in Japan upon its publication, winning, among other awards, the Noma Bungei Prize and the Mainichi Prize for Publishing Culture in 2005.

The idea of adapting this story for the screen isn't new, by the way.

South Korean director Kwak Kyung-taek had already considered a film adaptation in 2006, shortly after the work was published in South Korea. Nearly 20 years later, the project may finally come to fruition in the form of a Korean-Japanese series.

It remains to be seen how this new adaptation will handle the events of the novel and what role Jang Ki-yong will be given if the negotiations are successful.

A new project that could be added to Jang Ki-yong's schedule in 2027

This news comes as Jang Ki-yong already has another drama scheduled for 2027.

The actor is indeed set to appear in « Law of the Line » (provisional title), an MBC series scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights. The fact that it will also be featured in «Get Out of the Peninsula» suggests that this will be a particularly busy year.

Announcements

Above all, this new project could allow him to explore a different genre, in an international production centered on a plot involving a military crisis and suspense. However, we’ll have to wait for an official announcement to find out whether Jang Ki-yong will actually accept the lead role.

In the meantime, «Get Out of the Peninsula» has been announced as a Korean-Japanese co-production for Prime Video, with filming scheduled to take place in Japan in early 2027.
