In South Korea, a single day can determine the course of a whole life: the day of the suneung, the national college entrance exam. It is on this day that three high school students will commit an irreparable act in « The Substitute », a TVING thriller set to premiere on November 23. The streaming service has unveiled a poster that sets the tone: «That day, we crossed the line.»
An exam that brings an entire country to a standstill
To understand what’s at stake in the series, you have to grasp what the Suneung means in Korea. Every year in mid-November, the country slows to a crawl: companies adjust their schedules to clear the roads, and flights are grounded during the English listening section. A single score can open—or close—the doors to the best universities, and with them, the doors to the best careers.
The release of the series, just a few days after the actual exam, is no coincidence.
Taking the exam in someone else's place
At the heart of the story is Kang Geon-tae, played by Cha Kang-yoon. Coming from a modest background, he attends the prestigious Jeonggyeong High School—which is mostly attended by the children of the wealthy—thanks to a special scholarship. There, he consistently ranks first in his class.
But he has a secret. And someone knows it. Desperate to escape poverty, he accepts an offer that is as unfair as it is impossible to refuse: to take the suneung in place of a blackmailer.
Opposite him, Bae Hyeon-seong, who appeared in «Family by Choice,» plays Nam Jae-yeop, the seemingly perfect student: wealthy, handsome, and an excellent student. But this flawless existence is nothing more than a facade. The day his life strays from the path laid out by his father, everything begins to unravel, and the young man becomes uncontrollable, like a grenade with its pin pulled.
Park Yoon-ho rounds out the trio as Joo Hee-dong, who admires Geon-tae so much that he looks up to him as a role model. He takes a strange pride in being his friend’s only confidant. But Jae-yeop’s arrival will shatter their friendship.
A poster that asks the question
On the poster, Jae-yeop and Geon-tae stare straight ahead, determined, beneath a multiple-choice answer sheet from the suneung overlaid. They are moving in the same direction, but for very different reasons. It remains to be seen which choices they will make when their future is at stake.
In terms of production, the series sets itself apart from classic school dramas by adding suspense to a subject familiar to all Koreans. Three young men, each with his own flaws and desires, each holding the others hostage through their weaknesses: enough to turn a simple exam into a dangerous game.
The cast also features seasoned actors: Uhm Ji-won, Park Hyuk-kwon, and Baek Ji-won.
