The cast of the Korean remake of ’ Unnatural »is taking shape. Following the confirmation of Lim Yoona, from Girls’ Generation, tvN announces the arrival of Lee Jin-wook (Lee Jin-uk) will star alongside him. He will play a brilliant yet solitary medical examiner in this series, where every autopsy reveals a hidden truth. This comes as confirmation after several months of rumors about this duo.
An adaptation of a Japanese hit
Aired in Japan in 2018, «Unnatural» left a lasting impression and won numerous awards. The series followed a team of medical examiners tasked with solving suspicious deaths, with a narrative that was both intelligent and deeply human.
The Korean version follows this premise: at the U.D.I. center, which specializes in unnatural deaths, medical examiners investigate bodies to uncover what lies beneath the surface. Yoona, whose casting had already been confirmed, plays Song Do-eun, a medical examiner.
The medical examiner who is interested only in the dead
Lee Jin-wook plays Gu Seung-hyuk, one of his colleagues at the center. He is a cold man who rarely shows his emotions and deliberately keeps his distance, with an impassive expression and a healthy dose of cynicism.
He focuses his attention only on the dead, never on the living. So much so that his colleagues have nicknamed him «Jeoseung Hyuk,» after the Korean word for the afterlife.
But behind that aloof demeanor lies an unparalleled expert. With nearly 3,000 autopsies under his belt, he works quickly without ever compromising on precision, and can spot even the slightest trace left on a body. Nothing around him can distract him from the task at hand.
A New Look for Lee Jin-wook
For the actor, who came to international attention through «Sweet Home,» this is a new playground. After playing a string of roles as detectives and lawyers in search of the truth, this time he’s switching sides to join those who seek it through the clues left behind by death.
The production is banking on his icy charisma and his restrained acting style, which it believes are ideal for a character who never shows what he’s feeling. It also promises that Lee Jin-uk will be able to convey the emotions hidden behind that impassive face.
«Unnatural» is set to air on tvN in 2027.
