The program for Jang Ki-yong for 2027 is taking shape. MBC confirmed on October 19 that the actor will play the lead role in « Law of the Line » (literal translation), in the face of Oh Jung-se. A drama that delves into the power struggles at a major bank, where careers and betrayals play out in the hallways of the headquarters.
Two underdogs face off
At the heart of the series is a showdown between two men who should never have ended up in this situation.
Jang Ki-yong plays Tak Do-il, an employee at Nara Bank. A graduate of a provincial university, he has neither a network nor a patron in an institution where everything seems to be decided among insiders. His strength lies elsewhere: a genuine talent for reading situations and negotiating, which will allow him to shake up the status quo. Rather than joining a clique, he chooses to play by his own rules.
Opposite him, Oh Jung-se plays Chun Kyung-ho, the vice president in charge of the commercial division. He, too, did not follow the traditional path: with only a high school diploma, he climbed the corporate ladder one rung at a time, eventually becoming one of the frontrunners to take over as the bank’s president.
Two underdog stories, but two opposing positions. One has just entered the corporate political arena, while the other already has a firm grasp of all its rules. Their interests will become intertwined in a veritable game of chess, with nothing less than control of the bank at stake.
A series about what goes on behind the scenes of power
«Law of the Line» is billed as an office drama, but of a particular kind. There’s no workplace romance here: the series focuses on factional struggles, strategic appointments, and betrayals that come with the race for the top.
An ideal setting for Oh Jung-se, whom international audiences first discovered in « It's Okay to Not Be Okay », and who has often excelled in roles with two distinct sides.
A team accustomed to success
Behind the camera, the project features a strong lineup of talent. Directing duties have been entrusted to Kim Sung-yong, who is known for the thriller «The Veil» and the historical drama « My Dearest ». The screenplay was written by Eun Ki-baek.
The project is also being supervised by Kang Eun-kyung, the creator of the medical drama series «Dr. Romantic» and a key figure behind «The World of the Married,» one of the biggest ratings hits in the history of Korean cable television.
This confirmation comes a week after the announcement of talks between Jang Ki-yong and the team from « Get Out of the Peninsula », a A Korean-Japanese co-production for Prime Video. If this second project comes to fruition, the actor could take on two very different roles next year.
