A few weeks before its release, « Spooky in Love »continues to reveal new details about its world, which blends romance and the supernatural. Yang Se-jong, who stars alongside Park Eun-bin, recently explained what had convinced him to join the 2011 remake of the film «Spellbound.».
The tvN drama tells the story of Cheon Yeo-ri, the heiress to a major hotel chain who can see ghosts, and Ma Gang-wook, a brilliant prosecutor who is terrified of spirits. Their lives are turned upside down when a simple touch between them allows Ma Gang-wook to see the ghosts surrounding the young woman as well.
A character guided by justice
For Yang Se-jong, it was above all the story arcs of the two main characters that made the project particularly interesting.
«I found it interesting to see how Cheon Yeo-ri and Ma Gang-wook’s stories unfold as the series nears its end, as well as how they each overcome their own challenges,» the actor explained.
He also showed a particular fondness for the character of Ma Gang-wook. According to him, a specific moment in the story changes the way his character perceives ghosts.
«There comes a moment when his view of ghosts changes. I was drawn to his sense of justice and his profoundly human side at that moment.»
Ghosts, Fate, and a Budding Relationship
Playing a man who suddenly discovers the spirit world required a great deal of imagination on the actor’s part. The many scenes involving ghosts led him to draw on his emotions and feelings on set.
«There were a lot of scenes where I encountered ghosts, so I often spent time letting my imagination run wild,» he said. «On set, I tried to stay true to the emotions I was feeling at that moment.»
For Yang Se-jong, three elements sum up «Spooky in Love» particularly well: the evolution of the relationship between Cheon Yeo-ri and Ma Gang-wook, the appearance of ghosts, and the bonds dictated by fate.
«Please keep an eye out for the incidents caused by the ghosts» appearance, as well as the kind of relationship that will develop between the two characters,” he teased.
«Spooky in Love» will air starting July 18 on tvN and will be available on Netflix.
