After the first footage from the script reading, « Between Steps »Finally shows what the romance between Choo Young-woo and Kim So-hyun. ENA's new drama has just released its first teaser and a poster, featuring a relationship that seems to be moving quickly: confessions, growing closeness, and a first kiss are already on the agenda.
«Between Steps» is the latest work by director Ahn Pan-seok, who passed away last August. Best known for «Something in the Rain,» «One Spring Night,» and «The Midnight Romance in Hagwon,» he returns here to a genre in which he made a significant mark: realistic romance, attentive to the emotions and daily lives of his characters.
Choo Young-woo plays Park Min-jae, a former swimmer who lost his right leg due to an illness. His life takes a new turn when he discovers robotics and pursues his studies in the field. Opposite him, Kim So-hyun plays Im Yoo-jin, a student who must also find a new path after her plans are derailed.
«I Like You»: Min-jae Doesn't Waste Any Time
The first teaser makes no attempt to hide the attraction that will develop between the two characters. Right from the start, Park Min-jae surprises Im Yoo-jin with a particularly direct confession: «I really like you.»
A voice then asks the young woman if she fell in love at first sight, «as if it were fate.» And the feelings seem to quickly become mutual, as Yoo-jin, too, eventually admits that she loves Min-jae.
The teaser then cuts between several moments from their budding relationship, including conversations, smiles, and moments of closeness. Min-jae, in particular, tries to put his feelings into words using a comparison that’s intense, to say the least: «To me, you're like the sun. You're burning.»
Yoo-jin replies: «Even so, try to swallow it.», before moving closer to him to kiss him.
These exchanges already give a sense of the tone of this story: rather than relying solely on an idealized romance, «Between Steps» is likely to follow two young adults who are still awkward when it comes to their own feelings and are facing life paths that haven’t turned out as planned.
A romance that’s «spicy, bitter, and sweet»
The new poster maintains this much lighter tone. Park Min-jae and Im Yoo-jin are shown sitting side by side on campus, each holding an ice cream cone and wearing an almost identical smile.
But the tagline suggests that their story won't always be so peaceful: «The spicy, bittersweet romance of two young people inexperienced in love.»
The choice of these three flavors thus encapsulates the different stages their relationship is likely to go through—from the excitement of those first feelings to personal struggles and more tender moments.
After demonstrating the collusion of Choo Young-woo and Kim So-hyun during the script reading for «Between Steps» It thus begins to reveal the dynamics of their characters in more concrete terms. And this first glimpse promises a romance in which Min-jae and Yoo-jin will gradually find their place in each other’s lives as they themselves seek to chart a course for their future.
«Between Steps» will premiere on October 5 at 10 p.m. KST on ENA and Disney+ (to be reconfirmed internationally).
