Just one week after its launch, « Doctor X: Mafia in White »is already shaping up to be the new hit from Kim Ji-won. The medical drama from SBS took the lead in the world rankings Netflix non-English-language series. It returns tonight with a third episode that promises to be particularly intense: Gye Su-jeong, the brilliant surgeon, appears in it covered in blood on an emergency room bed.
A flying start on Netflix
For her return to television, two years after « Queen of Tears », Kim Ji-won made a big splash. Released on October 9, the series racked up 4.6 million views in its first week and shot straight to the top spot on Netflix's global top 10 list of non-English-language series.
It ranks in the top 10 in 36 countries and holds the top spot in 7 of them, including South Korea, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand.
Adapted from the hit Japanese series «Doctor-X: Surgeon Michiko Daimon,» the drama follows Gye Su-jeong, a gifted surgeon who takes on corruption at her hospital armed with nothing but her talent in the operating room. A blend of medical drama and dark suspense that seems to have won over audiences.
Episode 3: Gye Su-jeong Between Life and Death
The images released for tonight's episode are cause for concern. In them, Gye Su-jeong appears motionless on a bed in the emergency room, her clothes soaked in blood.
The tension around her is palpable. Kim Sung-jin (Heo Joon-seok), an emergency room doctor, frantically tries to treat her, while resident Park Tae-kyung (Kim Woo-seok) looks panicked.
Another intriguing detail: the hospital director, Bu Seung-kwon (Son Hyun-joo), comes to visit her. What happened to put the hospital’s most brilliant surgeon on the receiving end of the scalpel this time?
Jang Seung-jo Arrives as a New Rival
Episode 3 also marks the arrival of a new character. Jang Seung-jo makes a special appearance as Na Dae-il, a new professor of surgery at Guseo University Hospital.
A former military surgeon, he has extensive clinical experience and is shaping up to be a formidable rival for Gye Su-jeong.
In the photos, he projects the image of an impeccable teacher: neatly dressed, with a relaxed smile. But a fleeting, icy glance sows doubt about his true intentions. Even his handshake with Jang Hee-sook (Lee Jung-eun) carries a subtle tension, hinting at the turmoil he might cause.
«Doctor X: Mafia in White» consists of 12 episodes, airing every Friday and Saturday. Episode 3 airs this Friday, October 16, at 9:50 p.m. (Korean time), which is 2:50 p.m. in France, and will be available on Netflix the same day.
