Ten years after «Dr. Romantic,», Yoo Yeon-seok and Seo Hyun-jin will be reunited on screen once again, but this time their relationship will be much more unsettling. On September 22, MBC confirmed the air date for « The Perfect Lie », while sharing a first glimpse of the script reading, during which the two actors have already clashed over two completely opposing versions of the same memory.
Directed by Jo Young-min, who also directed « You and Everything Else », this psychological thriller revolves around a simple question: What happens when two people remember the same event in completely different ways?
Yoo Yeon-seok and Seo Hyun-jin will be at the center of this showdown, alongside Ok Ja-yeon, among others, Im Seong-jae, Kim Ji-hyun, and Lee Chun-hee. The first script reading now offers a glimpse of the tension that is expected to gradually build between their characters.
A perfect matchup before their teams face off
Yoo Yeon-seok plays Min Joon-ho, a heart surgeon and single father who is trusted by those around him. In the operating room, he is described as particularly calm and rational. When he is reunited with his only son, his behavior changes completely, revealing a much warmer father.
Throughout the performance, Yoo Yeon-seok skillfully played on this contrast, shifting from gentleness to a much more unsettling coldness as the conflict between his character and Seo Hyun-jin’s begins to take shape. Seo Hyun-jin plays Kang Ji-sun, a librarian at an elementary school. It was through her work that she met Joon-ho, who is the father of one of the students.
Things start off particularly well between them, though. The two characters share what is presented as A Perfect Date. But after that evening, the situation takes a radically different turn.
Ji-sun's emotions then swing between extremes as she and Joon-ho offer two conflicting accounts of the same memory. The search for what really happened thus becomes the heart of the thriller.
Yoo Yeon-seok and Seo Hyun-jin meet again ten years later
«The Perfect Lie» will mark a highly anticipated reunion, as Yoo Yeon-seok and Seo Hyun-jin previously starred together in the first season of «Dr. Romantic,» which aired in 2016. Ten years later, however, their new dynamic will be very different from that of Kang Dong-joo and Yoon Seo-jung.
According to the drama’s production team, their confrontation was already particularly intense during the script reading. The two actors reportedly brought such energy to the scene that it sometimes felt like they were actually filming rather than just reading the script.
The rest of the cast is also expected to play an important role in the mystery.
Ok Ja-yeon plays Lee Hwa-young, a detective who specializes in crimes involving minors. Im Seong-jae plays her husband, Park Seok-gu, an UDT officer.
Kim Ji-hyun Kang Ji-eun plays Ji-sun's older sister, an anesthesiologist, while Lee Chun-hee is played by her husband, Kim Hyung-soo, who is therefore also Ji-sun's brother-in-law.
After bringing all these characters together for this first reading, «The Perfect Lie» can now start its countdown: The thriller starring Yoo Yeon-seok and Seo Hyun-jin will premiere on October 30 at 9:50 p.m. on MBC (awaiting an international platform).
