10 years after «Dr. Romantic,», Yoo Yeon-seok and Seo Hyun-jin are finally appearing together in the same drama. But their reunion in « The Perfect Lie »…will be a far cry from the medical romance that brought them together: the first teaser for this psychological thriller begins with an almost perfect date before plunging the two characters into a confrontation in which each accuses the other of lying.".
Directed by Jo Young-min, to whom we owe « You and Everything Else », «The Perfect Lie» is based on a simple question: What happens when two people give completely conflicting accounts of the same memory?
Seo Hyun-jin plays Kang Ji-sun, while Yoo Yeon-seok plays the role of Min Joon-ho. Yet the teaser begins without giving any hint of the confrontation that awaits them.
The two characters are enjoying a particularly successful first date. Smiles, glances, and a romantic atmosphere give the impression that a new story has just begun. Then everything changes.
A perfect matchup before their teams face off
Kang Ji-sun’s voice breaks the apparent tranquility: «Overnight, the world suddenly changed, as if everything had been nothing but a lie.»
The following images show Ji-sun and Joon-ho separately, sitting in what looks like an interrogation room. The couple, who just moments earlier seemed to be smitten with each other, are now giving two conflicting accounts of the same event.
Ji-sun insists: «I'm telling you, it's not a lie!»
Joon-ho, for his part, insists that it is a misunderstanding before stating: «That doesn't make any sense.»
Tensions rise further when Joon-ho, on the phone, asks the person on the other end to stop telling «that ridiculous lie.» Ji-sun seems just as determined to stand by her version of events. Furious, she warns: «If you've done something, you have to pay the price.»
From a promising first date, «The Perfect Lie» quickly shifts to a situation where one person’s words seem to directly call the other’s into question.
«Of the two of you, the one who lied is you.»
The teaser, of course, keeps the nature of the incident that sparked their confrontation a secret. Nor does it reveal which of the two characters is telling the truth—if either of them is telling the whole truth at all.
The final seconds actually reinforce this ambiguity with a voice-over line: «Of the two of you, the one who lied is you.»
A deliberately enigmatic tagline that sums up the concept of the thriller: Two conflicting memories and a truth that must be pieced together.
«The Perfect Lie» will also mark a highly anticipated reunion, as Yoo Yeon-seok and Seo Hyun-jin co-starred in the first season of «Dr. Romantic» in 2016. Ten years later, their new collaboration is taking a radically different direction.
This time, their chemistry should come into play in a psychological showdown where the trust between their characters is likely to quickly shatter.
«The Perfect Lie» will air on MBC starting in October. The exact premiere date has not yet been announced, nor has the international streaming platform.
