Kim Ji-won Is Willing to Do Anything to Save an 8-Year-Old Girl
In «Doctor X,» an adaptation of the famous Japanese drama of the same name, Kim Ji-won plays Gye Su-jeong, a brilliant surgeon who defies the rules of a hospital system riddled with corruption. In Episode 9, she faces the toughest challenge of her career: saving Lee Hyun-ah (Lee Chae-yu), an 8-year-old girl suffering from a form of cancer for which no existing surgical technique appears to offer a solution.
Refusing to give up on her young patient, Gye Su-jeong proposes a procedure that is as daring as it is risky: removing the child’s six organs, eliminating the tumors, and then reimplanting the organs into her body. This is a procedure that has never been performed before—one that even this surgeon, nicknamed the «mad genius of the operating room,» has never attempted. New photos show her standing before the doctors at Guseo University Hospital, determined to defend her plan despite the considerable risks.
Son Hyun-joo Opposes the Operation; Kim Ji-won Asks for Help
This proposal immediately drew opposition from Boo Seung-kwon (Son Hyun-joo), the hospital director. Citing medical protocols and the dangers of an untested technique, he refuses to endorse such an uncertain procedure. Two perspectives clash: that of Gye Su-jeong, who is willing to push the boundaries of surgery to save a life, and that of the director, who is concerned with protecting patients and the hospital from risks that have not been adequately assessed.
But this time, Gye Su-jeong’s exceptional talent won’t be enough. Unable to perform such a complex procedure on her own, the usually independent surgeon must turn to her colleagues for help. In a previously released clip, she bows deeply to them and makes an unusual request: «Please help me.» This could be a turning point in her career—provided she can convince the other doctors to follow her lead.
Lee Jung-eun Faces the Mystery Surrounding Doctor X
Alongside this medical emergency, another threat is closing in on Gye Su-jeong. At the end of Episode 8, Boo Seung-kwon directly questioned Jang Hee-sook (Lee Jung-eun), the head of the medical staffing agency that recruited the surgeon: «Is Gye Su-jeong Doctor X?» A question that clearly threw her off balance.
New photos from Episode 9 show the two characters facing off in a frosty atmosphere. Despite her apparent confidence, Jang Hee-sook seems on her guard, while the director watches her with growing suspicion. Their relationship—marked by temporary alliances and mutual distrust—could take a dramatic turn if Boo Seung-kwon discovers what she really knows.
Episode 9 of «Doctor X» will air this Friday, November 6, 2026, at 9:50 p.m. (Korean time) on SBS and will then be available on Netflix.
