Kim Yoo-jung and Park Jin-young will have to be wary of each other in « 100 Days of Deception ". With just over a month to go before it airs, tvN reveals new images of its two heroes and elaborates on the complex relationship that will develop between them, as each hides a crucial part of his identity.
Directed by Yoo In-shik («Extraordinary Attorney Woo,» «Dr. Romantic»), this historical spy romance will take place over a period of 100 days during the Japanese occupation of Korea. Thanks to its script and cast, this drama is one of the most anticipated releases of the end of the year.
From Pickpocket to Undercover Spy
Kim Yoo-jung interpreter Lee Ga-kyeong, considered the best pickpocket in Gyeongseong, now known as Seoul.
The new images also offer a glimpse into her different sides. Elegantly dressed in a suit, she slips a man’s wallet away without losing her composure. Another photo shows her in a worn hanbok, revealing a much less glamorous side of everyday life.
Ga-kyeong, however, had no heroic ambitions: her goal was simply to save enough money through her thefts to Move to the United States. But an offer she can't refuse will completely upend her plans.
Recruited as a spy for the independence movement, she infiltrated the Japanese colonial administration under the false identity of Geum Seo-hee. A new bob haircut, a suit, and a much more tense demeanor: her transformation marks the beginning of a mission where even the slightest mistake could cost her dearly.
It is in this setting that she will encounter a man whose identity is also more complicated than it seems.
A relationship that begins with lies and suspicion
Park Jin-young embodies Kim Tae-woong, who has been living for years under the Japanese name of Hideo Sato.
Adopted by Sato Shinichi (Jin Sun-kyu), Tae-woong grew up under that identity and now works as an English interpreter for the colonial administration. Always impeccably dressed and remarkably composed, he seems to have integrated perfectly into this world.
But his encounter with Geum Seo-hee will begin to upset that balance.
The two characters meet for the first time at Gyeongseong Station, before a series of seemingly chance encounters bring them closer together again. With each of them unaware of what the other is truly hiding, their relationship is initially built on suspicion.
The production explains: «Lee Ga-kyeong and Kim Tae-woong find themselves deeply connected from the moment they first meet at Gyeongseong Station. » It invites viewers to follow the evolution of this relationship between a spy operating under a false identity and a man who has been living under the name Sato Hideo, even though «it all begins with lies and mutual suspicion.».
But this mistrust obviously shouldn't be the only thing that binds them. The production team promises that Kim Yoo-jung and Park Jin-young will display chemistry that is «sometimes funny and thrilling, and at other times poignant and moving.».
Amid espionage, hidden identities, and budding feelings, the two heroes will have to uncover the truth about each other without revealing their own secrets too soon.
«100 Days of Deception» will premiere on October 10 at 9:10 p.m. on tvN and will be available worldwide on Netflix.
