After appearing in several productions in the late 1990s, including KAIST, Did We Really Love? and Queen, she gained widespread recognition with Ruler of Your Own World in 2002, when her portrayal of Jeon Kyung drew particular attention.

At the same time, she has built a successful career in film. She has appeared in Who Are You? in 2002 and Please Teach Me English in 2003, and went on to win several Best Actress awards for Someone Special in 2004, notably at the Blue Dragon Film Awards. She went on to take on more dramatic roles in Maundy Thursday in 2006 and Dream by Kim Ki-duk in 2008.

After several much quieter years, she returned to the big screen in 2018 with Beautiful Days, in which she plays a North Korean mother separated from her son. In 2019, after a nine-year hiatus from television series, she returned to the small screen with Romance Is a Bonus Book. In the series, she plays Kang Dan-yi opposite Lee Jong-suk—one of her best-known roles among international audiences.
