Rarely has an online adaptation of a novel been so eagerly anticipated. A reading phenomenon in Korea and internationally, it was later adapted into a webtoon, « The Remarried Empress » («The Remarried Empress» in French) is coming to Disney+ November 4, featuring an all-star cast. With less than three weeks to go before its release, new footage shows that the series has no intention of toning down the cruelty of the original story.

Adapted from a popular online novel (webnovel), the drama follows Navier (Shin Min-ah), the perfect empress of the Eastern Empire. Betrayed and then repudiated by her husband, Emperor Sovieshu (Ju Ji-hoon), she chose to marry Heinrey (Lee Jong-suk), Prince of the Western Empire.

A cast tailor-made for grand court intrigues

The drama brings together four lead actors who are well known to audiences. Shin Min-ah, who rose to fame through «Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha,» plays Navier, the impeccable empress of the Eastern Empire. Ju Ji-hoon, seen in «Kingdom,» plays Sovieshu, the emperor who will betray her.

Opposite them, Lee Se-young—a master of historical dramas since *The Red Sleeve*—plays Rashta, the runaway slave who will upset the balance of power in the palace. Lee Jong-suk rounds out the quartet as Heinrey, the prince of the Western Empire whom Navier chooses to marry after her divorce.

Two rivalries, two showdowns

The new photos highlight the two main themes of the series.

The first pits men against each other. In the most spectacular image, Sovieshu and Heinrey face off, swords drawn. For readers of the novel, this duel comes as no surprise: the rivalry between the emperor, stripped of his status as husband, and the prince who wins Navier’s heart is one of the driving forces of the story. But seeing it so directly on screen confirms that the series takes on a more physical dimension than the original work.

The second rivalry—more subtle but just as ruthless—plays out between the women. Navier and Rashta lock eyes in a palace garden. The empress, usually impassive, appears unsettled there. Rashta, for her part, lets the ambition hidden behind her innocent demeanor show through.

The Moment Everything Changes

Between these two confrontations, a scene from the banquet captures the turning point of the story: Navier’s hands are clenched, frozen in place, while the guests around her stand stunned. Elsewhere, a chill settles between her and Sovieshu, whose gaze is now turned toward Rashta.

That will be the crux of the adaptation: making the downfall of an imperial couple—portrayed as perfect—believable, and showing how Navier, rather than passively accepting her fate, takes control of it.
