After havingIt has been confirmed that Kim Nam-gil and Lee Yoo-mi will star Following the casting announcement earlier this year, SBS has finally unveiled a first look at « Nightmare »thanks to a particularly intriguing teaser.".
Set for release in 2027, this fantasy thriller will follow a group of vigilantes who take on criminals who have evaded punishment under the traditional justice system. Their method is unusual, to say the least: condemning them to live through a living hell within their own nightmares.
Justice that goes beyond the limits of the law
The teaser opens with a city shrouded in darkness, the scene of numerous crimes and tragedies.
Violent attacks, industrial accidents, and other tragedies occur one after another, leaving behind devastated victims, while some of those responsible manage to avoid punishment thanks to legal loopholes or extenuating circumstances. Amid this chaos, Kim Tae-yi appears—the detective played by Kim Nam-gil.
Faced with a particularly shocking crime scene, her expression betrays both her anger and her sense of helplessness in the face of a system that doesn’t always manage to protect victims. His voice then accompanies the images: «After destroying someone’s life, you’ll probably still sleep peacefully tonight.»
A line that perfectly captures the character's frustration with those who escape the consequences of their actions.
Kim Tae-yi and the Nightmare Makers Take Action
But Kim Tae-yi doesn't intend to just sit back and watch.
The teaser ends with a threat that is as unsettling as it is mysterious: «That’s why we’ll come for you tonight. In your dreams. » This statement directly echoes the series’ central concept. As previously revealed, Kim Tae-yi teams up with a group of vigilantes capable of entering criminals’ nightmares to inflict a punishment that the real world cannot impose on them.
Among them is Jang Gyu-eun, played by Lee Yoo-mi. On the surface, she appears unassuming and devoted to helping victims in her day-to-day work as a police officer, but in dreams she becomes a formidable «creator of nightmares,» capable of manipulating the minds of criminals and confronting them with their worst fears.
Through this concept—which blends a police investigation, fantasy, and reflections on justice—«Nightmare» promises to explore the gray areas between revenge and punishment. The first teaser also suggests that the criminals targeted will often be those who have exploited the loopholes in the judicial system to avoid any real punishment.
«Nightmare» is expected to air on SBS in the first half of 2027, and likely on Netflix as well, given the partnership between the network and the streaming platform. Who's adding it to their watchlist?
