The Story
Visit 1988, in the working-class neighborhood of Ssangmun-dong in Seoul, Five childhood friends grow up in neighboring families that share practically everything: meals, financial struggles, arguments, joys, and important moments in their daily lives. At the center of the group is Sung Deok-sun (Lee Hye-ri), an energetic high school student from a modest background, often overshadowed by her older sister and not particularly bright in school. Revolving around her are Kim Jung-hwan (Ryu Jun-yeol), reserved and sarcastic but deeply caring; ; Sung Sun-woo (Go Kyung-pyo), a model student who is very close to his mother and little sister; ; Ryu Dong-ryong (Lee Dong-hwi), the most eccentric and resourceful of the group; and Choi Taek (Park Bo-gum), a Go prodigy who dropped out of school to become a professional player.
As romantic feelings begin to emerge and a love triangle forms around Deok-sun, the series places as much emphasis on the parents and the relationships among the five families as it does on the teenagers themselves. Through the Seoul Olympics, music, television, and everyday life in the late 1980s, Reply 1988 It tells, above all, the story of coming of age, first loves, friendship, the sacrifices parents make, and those ordinary moments whose value we sometimes don’t fully appreciate until they become memories.

Impact and Success
Reply 1988 is considered to be one of the most memorable dramas in tvN's history and as the most iconic episode of the franchise Reply. Its blend of nostalgia, humor, and—above all—family dynamics has been a huge hit with several generations of viewers; in 2016, during tvN’s 10th-anniversary celebrations, the series was even chosen as best drama/content in the channel's history.
Its latest episode reached approximately 18.8 % national audience, a historic achievement for Korean cable television at the time; even after the records set since then by other series, Reply 1988 remains one of the highest-rated shows in tvN's history. The drama also served as a real springboard for its cast, notably Park Bo-gum, Ryu Jun-yeol, and Lee Hye-ri.
To the 52nd Baeksang Arts Awards, Shin Won-ho won the Best Director and Ryu Jun-yeol that of the Best New Actor, while the series was nominated for Best Drama. At the 2016 APAN Star Awards, Shin Won-ho was once again recognized for his directing, while Park Bo-gum and Lee Hye-ri won the awards for Best New Actor and Best New Actress, respectively.
Its influence has extended well beyond its original run: after officially launching on Netflix in French-speaking countries in 2021, the series continues to be discovered by new audiences. Its enduring reputation rests less on a spectacular concept than on its warm and deeply human portrayal of family, neighborhood life, and youth—so much so that Reply 1988 remains today a a major landmark in Korean slice-of-life fiction.
